Sump Pumps

When I was younger I loved to play hide and go seek.

  • It was my favorite game.

At my old house we would gather all of our friends to play. My old neighborhood had about a dozen kids that were all in a close vicinity of each other. We all had walkie talkies so it made the hide and go seek game more fun. We would all be on one channel and let the seeker know if they were getting close or not. My one friend and I would always win, we had the best hiding spots. When my family and I would go to my grandparents house, I would try to get my cousins to play hide and go seek with me. Most of the times they would join in. Mostly we would play outside but it was raining one day. I remember going into the basement kitchen and looking for a hiding place there. I saw a door that I never went in before. I opened the door up and saw a small hole in the floor with water in it. I was a little scared because I thought it was a small well with something hiding in the water. I immediately closed the door and searched for another hiding place. Now that I’m older I now know that it wasn’t a well. It is a sump pit. A sump pit is most likely found in the basement, a small hole that is designed to collect water. The water gets into the pit by entering through perimeter drains of a basement waterproofing system.

Garbage Disposals

Growing up, I was mostly in the kitchen with my mom in the evenings.

I would help her cook and prepare meals for the week.

I didn’t mind it because I would catch up with my mom and talk about our days. I would tell her about the latest drama in school and she would tell me about what she would experience at work. My favorite meal to help her prepare was lasagna. It would turn out to be really good then we would do the dishes and clean up. Doing the dishes was fine but we had no garbage disposal. So we had to scrape all of the food on the plate in the trash. My parents were talking about installing one so I mentioned it to them one night. Then after a few weeks, they called a plumber to come and install one. Because there is a decent amount of people in my family, our plumber recommended installing a 1hp model. This is because since there’s more people in our home, there is more food waste. He told us that he was going to install a 1hp model that contained stainless steel parts. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant and will last longer. The plumber told my parents that the stainless steel will cost more. They didn’t care because they wanted the disposal to last longer because it would be used after every meal. Plus it would eliminate future repairs because of a better quality garbage disposal. Now after every dinner that we make we will be using our new disposal.

Clogged Toilets

I remember when my sister was younger and when she loved to take baths.

She was very little at the time and every night my mom would give her a bath.

My sister loved having toys and filling the tub up high with bubbles. It was what she would look forward to every night. She would always pretend that she was a pirate or fish. The tub had a little net with suction cups that would stick to the side of the tub. The net would hold all of her favorite bath toys that she would play with. One evening my little sister was going crazy in the bath tub. She put all of her toys in the tub and was splashing and laughing. She was having a little too much fun. My mom told her to calm down a little bit but she didn’t listen. Once she was finished with her bath, and was wrapped in her towel, she took her toy and threw it in the toilet and flushed it. My mom got angry with her and asked why she did it. She responded that she didn’t like that toy anymore and it needed to go bye-bye. The toilet automatically clogged. It was extremely important that my mom call a plumber. The plumber came the next day. He got the toy out by using tools and draining the water. Luckily the toy wasn’t completely down the drain. Every time that my little sister had her bath my mom made sure she didn’t go near her toys and put them in the toilet.

Running toilets

I woke up in the middle of the night because I heard a weird noise.

  • I wasn’t sure where the sound was coming from so I grabbed my phone and turned on my flashlight.

I was a little nervous because my roommate went home for the weekend and it was just me in the house. I decided to grab my pepper spray on my keychain in case there was an invader. I went out into the hall and there I heard the sound. It was coming from the bathroom. I felt a little better that the sound was coming from the bathroom. There wasn’t anyone in my house. It was just the toilet making noises. It just so happened that my toilet kept running. I wasn’t sure what to do so I went back to bed and tackled the problem in the morning. I called my plumber and he came over. He suggested that I buy a new toilet due to it being so outdated. He said I could pay for the repairs but I just went with his suggestion. I wanted a new toilet anyway. I didn’t like my old one as much. The inside of my toilet was very rusty and looked like it was corroding. He said the corroding was most likely from a buildup of mineral deposits. I told him how long my toilet was running for and he said that that wasn’t very good. This is because I was wasting water and energy. He told me that I most likely lost about two-hundred gallons of water from last night.

Clogged Drains

The plumber tackled the hair and was able to get rid of the clump.

My mother grew up with four sisters. My grandparents had a lot on their hands with all girls. My grandparents tried multiples times (as you can see) for a boy but they had no luck and stopped at the fifth child. Growing up my mother had to share a lot of things with her sisters. As a twin she had to share more with her twin sister. Being the youngest my mom was always last in line to in taking showers in the morning to get ready for school. But most importantly because she’s the youngest she would get bossed around a lot to do her older sister’s chores. Getting ready for school was the hardest for my mom and my aunts. They had to share a tiny bathroom with one mirror. Eventually my grandfather filled a wall in the bathroom with all mirrors so they could get ready simultaneously. However there was an issue. Because they were all girls with long hair, the hair would get caught in the showers drain. My grandfather would try and unclog it himself but he couldn’t do it. So he decided to call a plumber to do the job. The plumber tackled the hair and was able to get rid of the clump. My grandfather told me that the plumber would use tools and a plumber liquid to loosen the hair out the drain. Calling the plumber wasn’t the first time my grandfather called him. There were multiple times during my mom’s childhood that he would have the plumber on speed dial.
