George has been my friend for many years. We met in elementary school and later found out we live in the same neighborhood. After that, we were inseparable. This also made our parents close, and many people mistake us for close relatives. After high school, we opted to go to different colleges and explore life. College was such a dope experience, and we were happy we chose to follow our paths rather than be in the same school. Things went well for both of us, but we were lucky never to lose touch. Now that we’re both living in the same city again, we see each other all the time when we aren’t busy at work. The other day George was home because he wasn’t feeling well, so I called to check on him. He told me he was trying to find a good HVAC business in the area for assistance. There was an awful smell coming from the HVAC unit in his home. George described the smell as old socks that hadn’t been washed in a long time. I told him to let me know the issue once the HVAC expert came over to fix it. It turns out there was a problem with the condensate line of his HVAC system. Since the condensate wasn’t draining, the standing water began to smell. The HVAC expert managed to unclog the drain line and clean out the drain pan of all the foul-smelling water. George told me that the guy advised him to always consider booking HVAC service twice or three times a year. That way, he could improve the efficiency and lengthen the unit’s lifespan.

Running around the house trying to get ready for work is something I’m used to.

Ever since I was young, I’ve not been the best at time management.

Even when I wake up early, I’m always running late. One morning, I was busy trying to finish putting on my makeup. The hot water was running slower that day, and I took too long to get out of the shower. Applying makeup is a delicate process, and I always take too long. As I was doing my eyebrows, my phone rang, and I saw it was my brother calling. I put him on speaker and continued with the other eyebrow. He told me about a new Heating and AC business that had opened in the city. My brother knew I was having issues with the system in my home. It was only about 3 years old and cost me too much money in repairs. There always seemed to be an issue that made it run inefficiently or not. Finally, I was giving up and wanted to spend a lot of money to replace it. However, my brother suggested I get in touch with this new heating and AC business. Apparently, a friend at his workplace had a similar issue, and they sorted her out. I told him I’d call them up and see if they served in my area. I’m a little way out of the city, so few companies want to drive there to fix heating and AC systems. Fortunately, my brother saved me the trouble and said my area was listed as one of the service areas on their website.

Granny called me the other day with news about her goats. She was so happy that finally, her best lady had given birth. The pregnancy had been long and hard for one of granny’s favorite goats. She was worried that this would cause her stress, but the resilient mama pulled through. Now granny had 3 little kids, which she’d sent pictures for me to see. Since I wasn’t online, she called to let me know she had sent me the images. I had some time to talk, so we began talking as I looked at the adorable images. Granny moved on from her goats to talk about the new HVAC unit I got for her the previous month. Before granny had this old unit that was failing, plus it made the most annoying noise I’ve ever had. I knew if I didn’t change it for her, granny would continue to use the ancient HVAC unit. I drove to her home one weekend and spoke with a local HVAC company about the job. They were familiar with the area and knew my grandma’s farm was in a remote location. That wasn’t an issue for the HVAC company, and they managed to get the job done. Part of the change was upgrading my granny to a modern and energy-efficient HVAC unit. This was a great way to ensure she had a comfortable home and save as much as she could from paying the electric bill. Her old unit was so bad that granny had to pay such a high energy bill. I helped her out, and this is when we began talking about getting a new HVAC unit for her farmhouse.

Dad and I were arguing about my car the other day.

• He was insisting I take it to the auto repair shop for servicing.

I knew he had a point since it was time for the annual service. But, my friends and I were heading to the lake that weekend. If I took the car to the shop, that meant I would pick it up the next week. I tried to reason with my dad, but he was adamant that this had to be done to ensure the car was in great condition. So, as a compromise, I told him I’d take the car to the shop if he lent me his truck. We were still negotiating when we saw an HVAC van pull up on the driveway. Dad had phoned the HVAC business in town the previous day to book an appointment. He wanted an HVAC technician to come to do the annual tune-up and check-up before summer. The HVAC technician got out of the van, greeted us, and spoke with dad. Dad explained he wanted a full inspection of the HVAC system. Then afterward, the guy would inspect the house’s plumbing. I was surprised by this request and asked dad about it. Dad told me that the company did HVAC servicing, plumbing and electrical work. All their staff had certification in these industries and could do a great job. I found that an impressive business model since every home needed HVAC, plumbing and electrical work. If one expert could do all 3, he or she must earn well and be really skilled in their job.

Ever since I was a little girl, I was close to my grandparents.

• After mom’s marriage failed, they stepped in.

They made sure we had a roof over our head, and grandpa gave mom a job. She was a top manager in his HVAC business for a long time. This meant I was always at the office with both of them and learned a lot. Grandpa and I would go out to customers’ homes to fix their heating units or ACs. While there, grandpa started teaching me about proper care of HVAC systems. He also taught me how important it was to be good to people and enjoy my work. Grandpa was loved and trusted by his customers that they often barely watched over his work. I remember so many times we’d arrive at a house, retrieve the key, fix the HVAC system, do a tune up, close up, and leave. There was never even one time a customer would call back to say something was missing from their house. That was the level of trust that grandpa had built for his HVAC business. Later, while in high school, he began teaching me about running an HVAC business in hopes I’d take over from him one day. Mom loved the company, but she said I was the best person for the job. I went to business school in college and trained at an HVAC school to get my certification. Both would ensure I have the skills, knowledge and certification to run the successful HVAC business that grandpa was handing over to me. I still feel honored and grateful to date that my grandpa took the time to raise and educate me about the HVAC industry.
