The cold air hit me in the face

My friends and I went skiing last weekend.

There was a special at the ski resort.

Anyone that was wearing a Santa suit, elf suit, or a costume that looked like a reindeer could ski all day for only $30. The cost of the lift ticket was $30 instead of $120. The deal was amazing and a huge savings. I already had an elf costume at my house, but my friends and I went shopping and found other costumes so they could get dressed up too. We drove 3 hours to the ski resort. There were tons of people dressed up like Santa and the elves. I thought we might be the only people, but more than half of the people on the ski slopes that day were dressed up like Christmas characters. It was extremely cold and frigid on that day that we went to the ski resort. It was only 21°. They were making snow on the Double Diamond course, so I decided to stick to an easier downhill slope. I took the ski lift to the top of the mountain. Once I was in the air, the cold air hit me in the face. My face was frozen by the time I reached the top of the mountain. I couldn’t feel my nose, cheeks, or my lips. I wrapped my scarf around my face three times and tied it in the back. I made it to the bottom of the hill in less time than it took for the lift to get me to the top. I was freezing cold though, so after that I went indoors to sit by the heater. I grabbed some hot cocoa and sat by one of the heating registers.

Breathe in and Breathe out, Knowing my Air Purification System is Running Well

I can finally breathe well again after getting my air purifier fixed in my flat.

It has been broken for many months and I am finally at the point where I have money to get it fixed, and so I did.

Now the air quality in my flat is a lot better and my asthma is under control a lot more than it used to be. We have three cats living with us and I think maybe my allergies cause me to have breathing problems, but now I think they are going to be a lot better than they were with the machine running again cleaning the air. I have a HEPA filter in my main HVAC system and it helps a lot too, but I don’t like to run the system too much because it uses a lot of power compared to the air purifying system. I don’t even know if it is the cats causing my allergies as I am also allergic to dust and pollen and it very well could be them causing the asthma problems. Anyway, enough with that, I need to start focusing on my trip tomorrow and making sure that I have everything I need for the three week stay back at home overseas. I can’t wait to get to mom’s house tomorrow night and see the crackling fire in the fireplace and the Christmas tree in the living room. I miss mom so much and just want to give her a hug when I wake up in the morning. She is a lovely being.

Seven Minutes and my Miso Soup and Rice is Ready to Eat

I have a Japanese chef as a roommate now and I am getting to try some really good Japanese dinners a few times a week.

I cook for her too, as I am a pretty good cook myself and like making meals for other people to try. I just bought this local business stock today and sold a sinking ship stock that my local contractor friend said to buy, even though I have lost money many times listening to him. I am good at buying high and selling low out of fear and it has cost me a lot of money. Whatever, I will just work more for the heating and cooling corp and keep losing money because that is what I do best, haha. Why would you buy a stock that has already sunk 94% this year and it seems like it is on its way down even more? I guess I just like the underdogs, kind of like this HVAC company stock I bought last year that was way down and jumped up just after I sold it. I guess a lot of people have lost money in stocks but it doesn’t make me feel much better. I should have just put my HVAC equipment repair money that I made in the bank and I would have about $115K right now, as opposed to the $3000 I am left with. I feel like I am on the Titanic and am trying to save the ship from sinking by bailing it out with a coffee cup. My heating corp technician friend is the one to blame as he got me into this stuff to start with.

How important is heat?

I understand that none of us have ever “burned money” in the literary sense like Escobar did, but buying a poor quality furnace is basically the same thing

There are few things more essential to human survival than a source of heat. Heat allows us to cook food, to boil water, and to stave off the elements. I want to give you the best possible example of how vital heat is to human survival – Pablo Escobar. You probably know the name, because he was a world famous drug kingpin. Once while Escobar and his family were on the run from their enemies they had to stay in a tiny cottage on a cold winter night. The place had no electricity, no heating system, all it had was an old brick fireplace. There was no firewood, and hardly any furniture, so there was nothing to burn in the fireplace. In order to provide heating for his family, Escobar started burning the only thing he had – money. Escobar piled hundreds of thousands of dollars into the fireplace, burning a fortune to keep his family alive and safe for one night. With that in mind, why would I want to cheap out and get a low quality furnace? If this story illustrates anything, it’s that when we get down to brass tacks heating is more valuable than money. Trying to save a few bucks on a heating system will only cost you a lot more money in the long run. I understand that none of us have ever “burned money” in the literary sense like Escobar did, but buying a poor quality furnace is basically the same thing. If you can’t afford a good furnace, then at least stock up on wood for your fireplace.

I remember building a brick fireplace with my Dad

When I was a teenager my dad started building a small cabin by the lake on the edge of our property.

At first he said it was a fishing shack, then he said it would be a guest house. He worked on it for years, always making it bigger, always improving it. I could recognize the fact that our family didn’t really need a cabin at all, but it seemed important to Dad. I think he preferred working with his hands to being around his family. In order to spend more time with him I started helping Dad with the cabin, most notably with installing the brick fireplace, and later, the water boiler. We spent an entire summer building that brick fireplace, and it is a summer I will never forget. Dad was a big fan of going slow, brick by brick, making every detail perfect, and I came to see that it wasn’t about the fireplace at all. With so many aspects of his life being out of his control, Dad found peace and harmony in doing things like building a fireplace. He took his time to make it perfect, because he knew nothing else in life would ever be perfect! Maybe I’m getting a little maudlin, but to this very day I always think of Dad when I see a fireplace. It was a much easier task when he installed the hot water heater. Dad was still working on the fishing shack when he passed away, but I can’t imagine he would have wanted to go any other way.
