My buddy could have ruined my HVAC or voided the warranty

When my HVAC system was making squealing noises in the summer, I was wondering what in the world was wrong with my HVAC.

My buddy was there and he said he thought he knew what the issue was.

He insisted that we shut off the power to the AC condenser unit and check the motor. He said that you are supposed to add oil to the fan motor to stop it from squealing like that. I asked him how he knew that if he wasn’t an HVAC professional and he said he found that information online. Well, I went online when he was trying to take apart the AC condenser to add oil to the fan motor. Fortunately, I found information that not only will you void the HVAC if you try to work on it yourself, but you absolutely cannot add oil to the fan motor. I showed him that and he said it was a good thing I double checked. We put the thing back together and then I told him I was just going to change the air filter before calling the HVAC professional to have a look at the system. It was bizarre because the air filter was very dirty and I wondered then if that could be the issue. When I put a fresh air filter in the HVAC machine, suddenly the squealing sounds went away and it operated like normal again. My buddy shouted, “You fixed it!” I didn’t know the issue was as simple as having a dirty air filter, but my buddy said he read somewhere that’s a very common issue. I wish he would have suggested that in the first place before trying to open the AC condenser unit.
