I always said I wanted a retro table and chairs for my kitchen, but it did not prepare me for what my husband brought home. The table was metal with a bright red top and it reminded of the tables in a soda shop. It had two pull out leaves on each side of the table. The chairs had round seats and delicate metal scroll work for the backs. It was quite unusual and yet I liked it. He asked if I was pleased with the kitchen set. When I said yes, he said it would thrill me with the dining room set he had purchased. I asked where he had been, and he said he and his brother had gone to the auction to pick up some tools. Instead of tools, he had purchased the kitchen and dining room sets. His brother had picked up two black leather chairs for the living room, a matching sofa, and two coffee tables that looked like they were antiques. I wanted to ask where he got enough money for all those purchases, but I was happy with the gifts and didn’t want to destroy his joy over the gifts he bought me. My sister-in-law called and invited us to come over and play cards that evening. I was sure they wanted us to see the new leather chairs and sofa, and the new coffee tables. I’ll need to invite them over for dinner so she can see my dining sets. We both have pretty good husbands, and it’s good to show them how proud we are to have them, at least once in a while.
