Rule one for maintaining your HVAC system

As the owner of an HVAC system, you are probably wondering what kind of maintenance you need to be doing on your own.

The help of a professional is always a good idea when it comes to dealing with heating and air conditioning, but the truth is, any homeowner or even the tenant of an apartment complex in which responsibility over the HVAC system is given, needs to know how to do certain things to make sure their HVAC system is up to snuff.

One of the most important things that you can do as an HVAC unit owner is monitor the air filters. Air filters need to be regularly checked and replaced. The general rule is that air filters should be checked and/or replaced between 30 and 90 days. How often you need to replace air filters depends on a variety of factors, including the efficiency of the air filter itself and whether or not your home in particular produces a lot of debris that will end up clogging your system sooner rather than later. That’s why it’s good to check on things monthly, although you may not need to replace your air filter monthly. The more high quality the filter you use, the longer it will last. In any case though, whenever you pull out your air filter and notice that it is choked with dust and dander and debris, it is definitely time to replace it! When the filters get dirty air flow is restricted, which makes your blower motor work harder and harder. The harder your motor needs to work, the more years are taken off the life of your system, so replacing your air filters at an appropriate time is extremely important for the well-being of your HVAC system!
