Residential HVAC transition is interesting

I’m not so sure that I like just how accustom I’m becoming to central air conditioning.

For sure, this isn’t the first time that I’ve experienced modern HVAC technology.

I grew up right here, way down south where the heat pump is king. That said, it’s been a long, long time since I lived here or anywhere else in the country. After an entire career, thus far, spent overseas, I’m back to walking in and out of central air conditioning. This has been a weirdly interesting experiment actually. Every time I’d come back to visit, I’d be shocked at the level of cooling people now needed to be comfortable. And getting back to places where there wasn’t any residential HVAC couldn’t come quick enough. So when I was reassigned stateside for the end of my career, I figured I’d feel about the same way about air conditioning. Less is more please. But that’s not quite how it appears to what’s taking place as it all plays out. I’m inside the commercial HVAC of the office building all day, 5 days a week. When I visit family or friends, I walk into central air conditioning. And now that it’s mid May, I’m actually thinking about setting the thermostat in my apartment and flipping on the air conditioning. I’m so surprised by that. Getting acclimated to this level of cooling was something I didn’t expect. But man, it sure is nice to think about walking into an apartment that is cooler than outside and crisp thanks to humidity control. Plus, with some air conditioning, I greatly reduce my chances of mold and mildew. Looks like I’m home for good now so bring on the air conditioning.
