I can just turn up the thermostat and feel warm and cozy
I was recently reading a book on ancient Rome and found something very interesting. The people of these this time period were way more advanced than I ever imagined. The most interesting thing I found was the fact that they used a primitive form of radiant flooring long before it became the “new” technology that we think it is today. Everyone knows that people of ancient Rome loved the use of public baths and spas. Most of these were reserved for the upper class so when I read about the Hypocaust systems they used to heat the floors of these luxury spaces, I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. These heated air ducts were run under the flooring and fires were used to pump heated air through them. Today, most of our radiant flooring is fed by electrical coils or heated water. It is fascinating to me that even when there was no electricity, copper tubing, and boilers available, they built these chambers out of clay pipes and servants would maintain the fires to send the hot air through to the chambers. Here I thought that I had a top of the line HVAC system installed and this innovation was some sort of new technology, designed by some modern day genius. What I really have is a modern version of an elaborate heating system that was developed thousands of years ago. At least I don’t have to hire servants to keep my system running. I can just turn up the thermostat and feel warm and cozy. Additionally, I don’t have the mess associated with the burning fires in the basement.
