When I was growing up, we didn’t have any Central AC in the house.

I don’t think I knew anyone with central air conditioning until I was a teenager.

We had to find creative ways to stay cool when the summer temperatures were above 90 degrees. One time my brother and I got a crazy idea. We took a couple of towels from the bathroom and put them in the sink. We covered the towels with cold water and ice cubes. After the towel was wet and ice cold, we hung it up in front of the fan in the living room. Suddenly the air coming out of the fan was much colder than the air in the room. This type of air conditioning system is much like a swamp cooler. Cold water evaporates as air blows through the chamber’s creating a cool air effect. When I was a kid, I didn’t realize I was making a swamp cooler. Now that I am an adult, this knowledge certainly is handy. I have central air conditioning inside of my home, but there are times when my family and I go camping and we are outdoors without air conditioning. These are times when we use the novel idea of a swamp cooler. We set up a couple of wet towels in front of the outdoor fan and it provides a small amount of comfort in the hot summer sun. It might not sound terribly impressive, but on a hot summer day it feels absolutely refreshing and cool. Sometimes you have to improvise to make the best out of a situation.

The dealer told that person that the AC system had been broken all day

Every Saturday night, my friends and I go downtown to the poker room to play in the $300 Texas Hold’em no-limit tournament. My friends and I have been playing in this particular tournament for the past six months. I had a couple of finishes in the money, but I’ve never been able to get the big prize. My friend Jack had a first-place finish two months ago. The guy is still using his winnings from that tournament to play cards. There were almost a hundred people that day and the first place prize was over $5,000. Last Saturday night there was a radio event held at the same time as the $300 tournament. The poker room was unusually packed with people. The place is always busy, but there was hardly any room to stand. Since there were a ton of people inside, the air conditioners were working overtime. The pit boss must have turned the thermostat down to 60 degrees, because the indoor air temperatures were cold and frigid. I was wearing a lightweight jacket with a hood and I could feel my teeth chattering. The cold hands and shivering teeth made it difficult to bluff many pots. During the first break, I heard one of the dealers talkin to a different player that wasn’t in the tournament. The dealer told that person that the AC system had been broken all day. Since they had two large events that night, they decided to wait until after the place was closed to fix the air conditioning problem. It really changed my strategy and gameplay.

Friday was an extremely busy day.

The first job on my schedule was a ductless HVAC installation.

The customer wasn’t home, so I couldn’t complete the work. The customer confirmed the day before, so it was extraordinarily strange that she was not home in the morning when the appointment time came. I contacted the customer and I knocked on the door. There weren’t any cars in the driveway and I didn’t see any movement inside of the home. It seemed as if she completely and totally forgot. The next job on my schedule was an HVAC tune-up. I wasn’t scheduled to get to the address until later that afternoon and the customer was actually very happy that I arrived earlier. She had some errands that she wanted to run and I freed up the afternoon so she could get them completed. When I finished with the tune up, I called my boss and he sent me out to the country to write an estimate for a customer that wanted to know how much it would cost for Central AC in his farmhouse. I spent about 45 minutes out of the property carefully examining all of the house and the areas where we would need to add ductwork for the central AC. I finished with the job and didn’t contact my boss until I was already a few miles away from the address. That’s when I realized I couldn’t find my phone. I had to turn around and go back to the farm house to find my cell phone. Thank goodness for the owner found it on a fence post by the garage and decided to put it in the house.

Until a few days ago, I never had any trouble completing my job.

I’ve been working as a boiler repair contractor for twenty years. I like the job because I usually work alone. I repair boilers that are used for commercial and industrial use and that is a speciality. I charge a premium fee for my consultations and repairs. I stay steady, but I have time to spend with my family and friends. I never work seven days a week, especially now that I am getting older. I have far more aches and pains than I did when I was 25 years old. I have a few independent contractors that I can call from time to time if I get busy or overwhelmed. I had to call one of the guys on Monday, because I couldn’t complete a commercial boiler repair. The boiler needed to be welded and I’ve been experiencing a terrible amount of pain in my wrist. I tried to complete the weld on my own, but I couldn’t reach the area and the muscles in my wrist were cramping every time I tried. For the first time ever, I had to call someone to complete my job. It made me feel terrible and it made me realize that I’m not getting younger. I made an appointment with the doctor, so I can have my wrist examined. If there is something I can do to stop the pain, I want to get ahead of it.

I had to meet with one of my commercial clients to discuss some invoices and the client suggested meeting at a restaurant and bar.

It sounded harmless to meet there, so I agreed to the location.

As soon as we arrived, the client suggested ordering drinks. I didn’t want to end up getting drunk, because I still had more commercial HVAC clients to meet with on that day. I decided to get a beer, knowing the food would get rid of any alcohol from the beer. I ordered some wings and a big plate of fries. The client and I discussed the billing for her commercial property. She wanted me to lower some of the bills for heating and AC repairs. I looked at a couple of the bills and I agreed to make some changes. The waitress came by and offered me another beer. It tasted pretty good, so I ordered a second beer. Then that waitress brought a third beer on her own and I didn’t want to say no and be impolite. It was all over after the third beer. I was feeling pretty good and all of my good sense was completely out the window. The commercial HVAC client and I both drank too much at lunch and we ended up going to a hotel shortly after. I knew it was a mistake to put myself in that situation, and I didn’t have anyone to blame except myself. Now I am in an awkward situation with one of my biggest commercial clients. It certainly doesn’t help that the lady is married.
