I learned how to do basic drain cleaning and u-pipe maintenance

Having access to Google and Youtube has given many of us a level of freedom that we never thought was possible in past years.

I’ll never forget the frustration I had trying to learn how to solder electronics back in the late 1990s when neither of these sites existed and your only internet guides were written text and low resolution photos.

When I went to Youtube about 10 years later to learn soldering again, I was amazed at how easy the process was once I simply learned the right techniques. That’s applicable to any readily-learned skill as more people flock to sites like Youtube to share their abilities and techniques with the rest of the world. My mother is learning how to use watercolor paints from a series of videos that she started watching on a whim one afternoon while trying to kill time waiting on a telehealth appointment phone call. Although I would call a plumbing service for any serious plumbing repairs or service, I figured that learning how to flush a hot water heater would be minimal experience for basic drain cleaning and u-pipe maintenance in my master bathroom. Sometimes soap scum will settle in the u-pipe or p-trap. Removing it to clean out the built-up soap scum is much easier than I initially thought. I just had to watch a video on how to re-align the p-trap to get it back into place. You need to make sure you tighten it at the right angle so water doesn’t constantly leak out underneath your sink. Some install water leak detection alarms underneath kitchen and bathroom sinks for this very reason.

I don’t know where I would be in life without indoor climate control

I recently spent a week with a friend in Nicaragua.

This was my first time ever leaving the United States.

I had never even gone over the border into Canada during all of the years that I spent living in Michigan during the time when you could cross the border without a passport. My friend and I had been looking at options for spending spring break somewhere out of the country. He was used to traveling all over the world and staying in hostels to save on money. The idea of staying in a questionable accomodation in a country I had never seen while speaking a different language than the population was a scary idea for me coming from my inexperience. Things just went downhill from there. When we arrived at the place where we would be staying, I discovered that there was no shower. All there was in place of a real shower was a wand, chair, bucket, and drain in the floor. You take a shower by filling buckets of water and pouring them over your head. On top of this setback, I soon discovered that there was no form of indoor climate control either. I guess I should not have expected an air conditioner in this part of the world, but another part of me wondered if maybe there was an old window air conditioner or a ductless mini split, but there wasn’t even a fan to push in air from outside. That week made me realize how much I take indoor climate control for granted. I was so happy to have air conditioning again when I got back home.

I’m Getting Heated Floors In My Basement

I enjoy the finer things in life and I like to spoil myself.

I have recently decided to get heated floors in my basement.

Now not everyone realizes that this isn’t something I am doing for no reason. I spend a lot of time in my basement. It’s where I do my laundry and where my exercise equipment is. I also have a bathroom downstairs. I would like to be able to shower as soon as I am done working out so I can keep all my workout clothes downstairs when I change. The only problem is, my basement stays colder than the rest of my house and my floors are painfully cold. I have only showered in my basement a couple of times because I can’t stand to step out on those cold floors. Installing heated flooring in the basement will give me a chance to make the most of it and really use my exercise equipment as I want. I am not even thinking about installing them myself. I want it done right and I want it done fast. I have hired an HVAC technician to install them for me. The HVAC company was happy to assist me in choosing the right type of heating flooring for my home and my budget. It should be installed in just a few days and I cannot wait to feel how warm those tiles will be on my feet. I plan on spending a lot more time working out and using my downstairs shower now that my feet won’t be so cold when I finish.

Ductwork cleaning after gutting the house

My husband and I bought a house and fixed it up for months before moving in.

It was great because the house could be a mess without affecting me.

My husband redid all the floors, I scraped the popcorn ceilings and painted all the rooms. I even gutted a bathroom before I moved in. It was smart to limit the amount of dust on my furniture. After I finished scrapping, sanding and tearing things down, I cleaned the whole place. I scrubbed the walls, ceiling, floors and got the space ready. My husband and I moved all our stuff into a well done, cleaned up house. Shortly after moving in I noticed all the dust on my surfaces. I also noticed I was sneezing, coughing and had headaches. I realized that the whole time we worked on the house, the HVAC unit was running. The HVAC was sucking up all the dust and storing it in the ductwork. We then moved in, and started running the dirty system. I hated constantly cleaning and feeling sick. I called a HVAC company to do ductwork cleaning and it was more than worth the money. They do it much more carefully now because they have a camera to watch what they are doing. They suck up all the dust rather than scrub too. It ensures the ductwork doesn’t get damaged in the process. I have noticed the difference after they have gotten cleaned too. My air feels fresher and my surfaces still clean. If anyone does a dust heavy project, think about your HVAC unit.

Might get zone control with the money

My husband and I didn’t do the traditional wedding.

  • We actually just signed some papers and called it a day.

Our families still sent us money and now we don’t know what to do with it. My husband and I both agree the money should go towards something in the house. But what can we agree on? I know the two of us both would like to have zone control. We don’t share a bedroom because we have vastly different temperature needs. My husband likes to be pounded with AC all night long. He also wears a CPAP and is a light sleeper. I want to have the heater running, be under a thick comforter and I move a ton when I sleep. It is better to keep us separate. Having a zone control system would mean we could set our thermostats and not bother the other one. Additionally zone control reduces our energy bills. Unused rooms don’t need to have HVAC anymore. We have another bedroom, bathroom and laundry room that get perfect heating and air that doesn’t need to. To upgrade to zone control we need a ductless HVAC unit though. Our current unit is almost 20 years old, it is time. We would need a new HVAC system, multiple indoor units and thermostats and of course the installation fee. I don’t know if our wedding money would cover it. I would hate to get deep into the project and realize I need to sink my own money into it. It is a lot of money to buy something we don’t really need at this point.
