I have a lot of questions about living up north now that my wife and I have finally made our move.

It’s summer and I’m excited to get outside and go hiking, but I was worried about the wildlife first.

We came from the south in a region known for black bears, panthers, wild boar, and alligators, but now we live in a place that has zero bears and one single species of rattlesnake. People in the area who I’ve met have all told me to be wary of deer ticks because they can carry lyme disease. I was also shown photos of poison ivy and how to avoid it. Short of that, I didn’t have any crazy wildlife ready to jump out of the bushes like I did back in the south. One time I accidentally came up on a female boar and her offspring. If I hadn’t been downwind, she probably would have noticed me and started charging. Thankfully, I was lucky that day and left the area unscathed. I’m so happy with the woods up north, in part knowing those near-injury encounters with extreme wildlife is just not going to happen to me again for as long as we live in this area. However, it’s already starting to get colder as it’s the end of the summer. We have a furnace in our house, but I’m curious about the installation costs of a simple wood stove that we could use as a supplemental heat source in our house. Our lot is several acres and the number of dead trees that we can harvest for firewood are plentiful. I hope that we can afford the wood stove installation because it would help us save on winter heating costs by a considerable amount.

Sometimes I think I’m following my gut when in reality my gut is screaming “No!” at the top of its lungs.

This is what I thought regarding a restaurant I wanted to book for my birthday dinner this year.

I tried and failed to secure a reservation on three separate occasions before I finally gave up. Not two days later did I read about someone dying from food poisoning after having a meal at that same restaurant. Most people would chalk this up to be a simple coincidence, but I’m not so sure myself. Regardless of any underlying reasons, that “accident” saved me from potentially getting really sick that night. Instead, I stayed at home and had a delicious home cooked meal that I would not have been able to get at any local restaurant. However, I had a similar situation occur just two weeks later when I called the wrong heating and cooling company. Instead of avoiding the wrong company, in this situation I accidentally called the wrong company and ended up finding an HVAC supplier with better reviews than any other heating and cooling company in the entire county. They offered me an extremely competitive price on an HVAC service warranty and even threw in a couple of UV bulbs to replace the old ones in my air conditioner from before. All in all I only have positive things to say about this HVAC company. They won me over with their impeccable customer service on top of all of their other advantages. I’m glad I called the wrong HVAC company because now I’m with a better one as a result.

My wife and I are not the most social people in the world, but we’re actively trying to change that as time goes on.

We want to see our friends more frequently, so we try to plan outings and other events to share with our mutual friends and family members.

But for a few years after moving into our house, we still hadn’t invited any guests over for more than a single house-warming party. It seemed like an overdue endeavor, especially for our shared group of friends which is basically two other couples besides ourselves. After discussing it with the other four, we made plans for a momentous cocktail party at our new house as a belated housewarming party. Even if it was a few years late, it gave us an excuse to invite our friends over and bond for a few hours. Unfortunately, we spent too much time making sure the alcohol and food was perfect and didn’t do the obvious and insure that the air conditioner was working properly. We were mortified when our air conditioner died halfway through our cocktail party. No matter what we did with the machine, we couldn’t get it working again. Sadly, we had to postpone the rest of our party and call the HVAC company so they could send out a technician the following day. We ended up needing a new fan motor for our air conditioner, but at least it was still under warranty. Hopefully we won’t have any more annoying heating or cooling problems when we invite our friends over once again.

It’s stressful having a job that takes you away from home for days or weeks at a time because I worry so much about my house. Even with surveillance cameras running 24 hours a day, it’s not the same thing as being physically present in the event of a catastrophe. My cousin lost his home due to an electrical fire years ago, and it occurred while he was away on vacation. Ever since that happened, I have been petrified of the same thing happening to my house while I’m away on a business trip. I like to check cords and surge strips to make sure they have been properly removed from the wall if I’m going to be away from the house for longer than a few hours. On top of that, I also like to monitor my home with the pet cameras that are hooked up to my smart home interface. I wasn’t sure how often I would use my various smart home devices, but thus far I’m using almost all of them daily. My favorite of the bunch by far is my smart thermostat. It’s amazing having the ability to make real-time adjustments to my heating and cooling system wherever I can maintain a steady signal on my cell phone. This is particularly helpful when I go away on business trips and I don’t know where I should set the a/c to keep it there. The smart thermostat also displays current outdoor weather while using that same data to information for auto cycles. No matter where I live, I would definitely want a smart thermostat to use for a central HVAC system. They’re unbelievably generous, that’s for sure.

Sometimes my anxiety problems get the best of me, even when I’m trying to keep my composure.

This was a frequent issue in college when I had to do presentations in seminar classes.

During my worst bouts of anxiety, I would sometimes stutter or shake slightly while trying to hold my notes to use as a guide throughout the presentation. There was one particularly embarrassing experience when I got so overwhelmed and anxious that it made me physically ill and I had to leave the room to throw up two separate instances in a 20 minute chunk of time. Even after getting treatment through both therapy and medications, my anxiety problems persisted into adulthood. Now I learn how to avoid my triggers and stressors if I can manage. But sometimes there are scary situations that come out of left field that will throw me off and make me anxious as hell again like I am when I’m not coping well. For instance, my air conditioner wasn’t producing cold air yesterday in the middle of the afternoon and I was immediately terrified something had broken inside. The machine was still cycling and moving air through the ductwork, but it was warm exiting the ceiling vents. When my HVAC technician arrived to inspect the air conditioner, he informed me that the coils had simply frozen over with ice. The air filter was clogged and it made the coil freeze, thus preventing the coil from absorbing the heat in my air and creating the warm air situation that I discovered before calling my HVAC supplier. After replacing the filter, I haven’t experienced the same problem again.
