My HVAC company is always doing some kind of great special or other for their customers and it’s one of the reasons that I keep using them year after year. This year, they are offering a really great deal on a heating preventative maintenance service and I’m definitely going to have it done. I found out just the other day that they were offering a holiday special and it’s even better than their last preventative heating maintenance special was. I found out that they are going to be doing a holiday special where you can sign up for their heating and cooling maintenance program for the whole entire year and actually get it for almost half of the normal pricing. That is a deal that I just couldn’t turn down when I heard about it. Even though my HVAC system is relatively new and ‘m not really having any trouble with it at all, I’m going to preemptively order the heating and cooling maintenance program for myself for the year. I’m just going to go ahead and do it as a gift for myself for the holidays this year. I have also decided that since it’s such a great price right now, I’m just going to go ahead and sign my parents up for the heating and cooling program too. I didn’t have a great idea for a gift for them this year, so this is going to be a nice surprise for them. My dad will be especially happy about it since he’s the one who is always working on the old furnace at their house!

There was one thing I could never figure out about Christmas stories.

When they have Elves in the picture, why are their ears pointy? Unless they were aliens dropped off from another planet, or the weather conditions forced their ears to freeze pointed, there was no reason for them to have them.

I looked up the reason for elves to have pointy ears. One of the biggest reason is because they can hear better. They can listen in on children’s dreams and hear what they want for Christmas. They are also the reason Santa never needs to go without heat. They can hear when there is the beginning of a problem with the furnace, and they tell Santa. He’ll call the factory HVAC technicians and have them repair the furnace before it becomes a bigger problem. I also read that their ears are a distinguishing trait for elves. Santa is able to look at their ears and know who they are and what department they belong in. If Santa sees an HVAC technician elf, he knows there is something wrong with the furnace, and makes sure it is being dealt with. He can send them to the reindeer shed, or even to the garage where they house the sleigh. He never needs to go without HVAC in his sleigh as long as he knows where the HVAC elves are. I would enjoy being an HVAC technician at Santa’s workshop. There would never be a boring moment, and you could eat cookies all the time. I’m not sure I would like the pointy ears, but I could used to better hearing.

My son is one of the most curious kids I have ever met.

• He is always asking questions and they aren’t always the silly ‘why’ question.

He is genuinely interested in learning about things. I was working on our furnace last week, when my son came in from school. He asked me if Santa needed HVAC technicians? Since they lived at the North Pole, I surmised they needed HVAC service. I was sure they had a team of HVAC technicians available all the time. Joey shook his head and asked if I was absolutely sure. Christmas was almost here, and he wanted to make sure Santa was safe up there. He was more worried about his presents, but I could only laugh. I called a friend of mine who lived in North Pole. He was an HVAC technician, and I asked if he could call the house and ask for Joey. Let him know he worked as an HVAC technician in the North Pole HVAC company. I wanted him to assure my son that Santa was safe and warm. I also wanted him to let him know that Santa’s sled also had HVAC and he was going to be comfortable on his trip. Two days later, Sam called and asked for my son. I liked that he wasn’t telling any fibs, because he did live in North Pole, and Santas’ sleigh really did have HVAC installed. He had to have heating and air conditioning since he went all over the world, and it was summer in some areas, and winter in other.

The parents will sometimes allow their kids to watch when I am working.

I don’t mind having an audience, because I have kids.

Whenever I am working around the house, my kids like to see what I am doing. They keep a close eye on me, and will often ask what I’m doing, and even make some suggestions. My daughter wanted to show me how to repair the HVAC system in her dollhouse. She said I wasn’t used to working in tiny homes, and maybe her smaller fingers could do it better. Last week, I went to a home that had a four-year-old son. He was watching me working on the furnace, and I cracked my knuckles hard enough to make them bleed. If I hadn’t been watching the kid so closely, I may have come out with some choice words, but I didn’t want anyone cursing around my kids. The kid was sitting there quietly until he wasn’t. I put my knuckle in my mouth and he asked me if I knew what I was doing? I just stared at him, but he stared right back. He told me that when dad hurt his knuckles, mom would tell him he wouldn’t have hurt himself if he knew what he was doing. His dad would call a professional. He asked if he should have mom or dad call an HVAC professional. I told him I was an HVAC professional, but thanks for his input. He smiled and told me his opinion was no problem. Mom tells his dad that all the time.

I was working on a furnace last week, and the owner of the house sat on the steps watching me the entire time.

He kept telling me, on the double, like he was a staff sergeant working with his new recruits. I wanted to tell him to stuff his ‘on the double’, but I was the HVAC technician and he was paying me. I was sure that if I said something to him, he would call the HVAC company and I would be in a lot of trouble. I held my temper and continued working on the furnace. When I checked the air filter, I almost laughed out loud. I asked the owner when he last changed the air filter in the furnace? He looked taken aback and told me he changed it regularly. I showed him the air filter and said I thought it was time to have the ductwork cleaned if there was this much dirt in a month. It was a laugh out loud moment when he said he changed it regularly, but he didn’t say they changed the air filter monthly. It was just three people in the house, and he didn’t think it was necessary to change the air filter once a month. I still thought it would be a good idea if we were to call the HVAC company and have the ductwork cleaned. Even if he had the air filter changed every six weeks, there shouldn’t be this much dirt in the air filter. He agreed with me and headed upstairs to make the call to the HVAC company.
