I love my grandmother, but she is getting to the age where she sometimes forgets things that are very important.
- Last week, my mom was so upset because of grandma, that she was making an appointment to see if she had dementia or Alzheimer’s.
She went to take lunch to gran, and when she got there gran was sitting in her chair looking outside. There was an empty cup of coffee wrapped inside her hands, and she was smiling. Mom called her name, and gran asked if everything was okay. She said it was hot in the house, but gran didn’t have the air conditioning on. Mom was now wondering if she had ever had the air conditioning on? She bent down to gran’s level and gran put her hand on her shoulder. She was talking about how things had changed since she and grandpa moved into the area. There were only three houses on this street, but now that’s all you see. There are no parks, no grassy lot where deer and other animals roamed. Mom finally got her attention and asked about the air conditioning. Gran told her it broke last year, and went back to looking out the window. That afternoon, gran came to live with us. She didn’t argue, except to ask if she could take her pictures of grandpa since it was such a fast move. Mom told her she could take anything but the furniture. Gran laughed and asked if she didn’t want the broken air conditioning unit? I think gran was just lonely, because she was sharp as a tack once she moved in.
