Ignoring the ductwork is a bad idea

So perhaps the ductwork in our home was never cleaned.

And I’m really, really hoping that this is the case.

We recently had the HVAC professionals come out to do ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing. The HVAC professionals who were in my home were exceptional. All the HVAC technicians were very careful inside my home. I keep a neat and clean house so I really am appreciative of folks who respect that effort by being tidy. But the guys from the local HVAC company were on a whole other level. Their boots were covered every time they came in the house. And they were so careful to get any debris that got shook loose from the air ducts and ended up on the carpet. One of the HVAC technicians was on it the second it hit earth with a stick vacuum. But the sheer volume of dust and crud that came out of our ductwork was staggering. Apparently, the house was built in a time where they put some serious metals into ductwork. While the ductwork was horribly filthy. And that makes me gag to think about. The ductwork is in tip top shape otherwise. Still, it was shocking the amount of debris that kept coming out of the air ducts. I was almost embarrassed. In fact, I asked if any of them had seen any residential HVAC air ducts that were this bad. To my utter shock, they said that indeed, they’d seen much worse. I can’t even fathom what that has to look like. Perhaps these awesome HVAC professionals were simply being nice to an old lady. But wow, I’m still repulsed just thinking about breathing the air that was sharing the air ducts with that grime and dust.
