Growing up in a big city can be fun. I remember I used to run around the neighborhood with my friends until it was dark outside. My parents didn’t mind because we mainly hung out on our block, or we used to be inside my best friend’s basement playing different games. Those were the simpler days before technology took over our world. And while technology isn’t all bad, I do miss the days where we used our imaginations to create our worlds. I remember that my house was one of the only ones on the block that had window air conditioning, but my parents never turned them on during the day. We only used them at nights when we were going to bed, I can only assume it was to save money. So, in addition to the window A/C, we also used fans and we kept the windows with no A/C installed in them open during the day. I loved that we had the window A/Cs, but those things were ugly, and they were very noisy at night. Plus, they didn’t always work properly. In fact, they used to freeze up all the time and we had to turn them off for the ice to melt. Today, window A/Cs are way more advanced, the technology has improved, and they are more aesthetically pleasing. In fact, there are some window A/Cs where you can install it and still open your window, a design feature that was not available when I was a kid. In addition to the improved technology and features, the units have been manufactured to be more energy efficient. And while they can’t replace an HVAC system, they can be used to bring relief, especially to residents in the city where I grew up.
