My fireplace did not last through the night.

I thought I had the flames in the fireplace burning high enough to last the entire night.

I had never spent the night alone in the lake house before, so I wasn’t exactly sure what to do at night.

My stepfather and I had always gone ice fishing together, although he was very sick this year thanks to COVID. I tamped the fireplace and made sure it was burning gently, however it was not going to go out. I slept on the sofa, so I would be nice and cozy all through the night! Sometime around 3 or 4 AM, the fireplace burnt out, and I was shivering. I could not suppose I had completely forgotten to shut the flue in the chimney. The air was coming down the chimney, and making the fireplace burn hotter, and it caused the fire to peter out. It was snowing, and I was outside in sub-chilly temperatures gathering kindling and firewood so I could get the fireplace burning… After nearly several minutes, I had a roaring blaze going, and the lake house was warming up. I considered going fishing, however it wasn’t the same separate from my stepdad. I huddled up on the love seat and watched a couple of old films on my phone, and stayed hot by the fireplace. It was a nice quiet day for me, which I didn’t mind, however it wasn’t until later that evening that I remembered 1 single important equation about staying at the cabin. If the fireplace went out, both of us owned a generator and a mini split to keep us warm. I felt kind of foolish, despite the fact that I didn’t freeze myself to death, and I was still having a fantastic time with nobody to bother me.
